Handling the word of God with reverence

February 24, 2009

Though the word of God is plainly written for the common man to understand we must approach it with reverence as if we are approaching the throne of God.  Here are some guidelines as to how God’s word ought to be handled.

1. Be prayerful.    The most dangerous hinderance to properly understanding God’s heart is the deceptiveness of our own hearts.  There is a reason why apostle Paul warns Timothy not to establish young believers to be elders in the church. There is always a temptation that knowledge builds pride instead of the kingdom of God. Therefore we must first be humbled and emptied.  Our motive for study is just as important as the study itself.

2. Do not study about the bible more than the bible itself.  Reading books is a great way to tap into the great minds of the past and the present.  But none of these men’s writing contain the breath of God.  God can always give us insight through the insights of other more capable men but if our confidence lies with other men eventually when men fail us we will fail along with them.  Our confidence must come from his word.  Beware of allowing our reading of books to be primary and reading of scripture to be secondary.  If we do not saturate ourselves with the original then we will not be able to distinguish when the counterfeit is being peddled by false prophets.

3.  Read God’s word to judge the thoughts and intentions of our own hearts instead of others.  We are all prone to see the sins and mistakes of others more keenly than our own.  We will hear ourselves often say, “I know that I’m not perfect but..that guy is…..”  In other words, we can excuse our sins but their sins we should not be so gracious.  This approach to scripture always leads an individual to be divisive.  Considering how much exhortation we are given in the scripture to be united in faith and love, it is a dangerous thing to study His word expressly for the purpose of finding sin in others.  When sin must be exposed in others make sure that it is done with absolute humility and love otherwise we will do more damage than good.

4. Read for the glory of God.  The ultimate goal of God is for His own glory.  So the ultimate  goal of the bible is also His own glory.  The word of God is not ultimately written for our comfort, though I can’t imagine another book that does that better.  The word of God is not primarily for the purpose of deeper knowledge, though all the books in the world cannot match the vast wisdom that this book contains.  The bible ultimately is not  a how to guide to raising children, building a church, or preaching etc., though the book is full of practical advice for every facet and stage of life we may ever experience.  The ultimate purpose of this book is for the glory of God. Therefore, examine to see if the fruit of our reading is for His glory or to gain things simply for our own use.

5.  Read the scriptures like a love letter.  Do not skim through it as if to do your daily duty of reading in this book.  This letter was written with great care and love for His people.  Therefore we ought to read each verse with care and concern as if we are reading a love letter from our significant other.  Just as a love letter is not written hastily God’s divine word was not written to be read in haste.  It is better to know deeply what one verse says than to know superficially the whole bible.  When you think you know something is when you are the most dangerous.  Little knowledge sometimes is more dangerous than ignorance.  When we are ignorant and know it at least we are teachable.  But when we know superficially and yet think we really know something, that is when our hearts become hardened and our ears become closed to instruction.  Read it carefully so that false confidence will not creep into our hearts.

6.  Read it as the first recipients of the letters would have read it.  “Do not add or take away from the word of God”  is the warning with which  the book of Revelation ends.  Finding extra meaning in a passage that is not there is a dangerous doorway to many grievous doctrines.  It may seem harmless at first but the end result that this doorway introduces can ruin the reader and all those around.  If common sense makes the best sense seek no other sense..as my professor in Biola would always say.

I’d better stop here or no one is gonna read this.

LEVITICUS IS AMAZING

February 11, 2009

I know that typically the book of Leviticus is avoided like a plague but the length that God goes to protect His people from disease is amazing.  God’s primary promise to Abraham was that he and his descendants would be fruitful and multiply.  Not only did God promise that but He also made sure that the means by which that would happen was ordained as well.  The detailed description of the how to handle people with leprosy, discharges and even women in menstrual cycles is a testament to God’s care and love for His people.  All of God’s commands were to protect them from diseases that would have easily spread and infected maybe even wiped out other nations.  When we are children there are many things that our parents tell us to do that only seem burdensome and restrictive.  But as we mature we realize that much of our parents nagging were actually beneficial for our well being.  We may not fully understand everything that God commands us but we do know for sure that He cares deeply for His children.  Through my reading of Leviticus today,  I was reminded of God’s love and concern for His people.

God is truly amazing….

Merry Christmas

December 24, 2008

Merry Christmas………..

I pray that all of you will spend Christmas day being deliberate about remembering God’s gift of His Son to us all. God’s sacrifice for insignificant rebellious people like us makes me want to sing His praises for the rest of eternity. He is truly deserving of more than just a day. There are so many around the world that still haven’t heard the good news of His Son. Many will say Merry Christmas without ever knowing the treasure hidden behind those words. Let’s pray as we close out this year and think of how we can invest our life for 09, to find ways to open our hearts and mouths to declare His mercy and grace to those who are so desperate to know it.

Have a great Christmas Berean Family…..

Memorable Quote from J.I. Packer

December 10, 2008

from Keep In Step With The Spirit by J.I. Packer concerning the Corinthian church..

“If our reaction as readers is merely to preen ourselves and feel glad because our churches are free from Corinthian disorders, we are fools indeed.  The Corinthians disorders were due to an uncontrolled overflow of Holy Spirit life.  Many churches today are orderly simply because they are asleep, and with some one fears that it is the sleep of death.  It is no great thing to have order in a cemetery!”

Thanksgiving…………..

November 27, 2008

Every year we take some time off from our busy schedules to spend some quality time with our families remembering God’s blessing over our lives. This past Sunday the Berean family was able to do the same. Just looking around the room and seeing all the people that God has put together to run this race with was a great reminder to me of God’s continual blessings that we are all under. I heard a pastor this week talking about how we ought to have one day out of the year reserved for complaining and whining and the rest of the year we can be free to give thanks for all His blessings. He reminded his church that if we are not careful we can easily think that thanksgiving is something that we do once a year and then we go right back to our usual discontent feelings focused on all the things that should be rather than all the things that are in Christ. Our God deserves more than one day a year of our heartfelt gratitude for who He is and what He has done, does and will do. What an awesome God we serve.

The more I live the more I appreciate what God has done through His Son Jesus. I am more aware of how far I am from Him in my flesh. How much I really deserve His wrath. Sometimes I cringe when I hear old puritan songs that refer to us as wretched worm and the like. But I have to admit that there are times when I feel even lower than that. Yet despite my shortcomings and the sin that so easily entangles my heart and thoughts God allows me to praise Him by His atoning work in me. People say that the closer you come to God the more you reallize just how far you are. I guess I have been growing in my faith since I am more aware today of my utter inability to be near Him with my own strength than I did in my twenties (and thirties..I forgot how old I was). Of course I have always known this through the testimonies of my mentors and the books that I’ve read. But to have it hit you in your face over and over again is very humbling–and sanctifying at the same time. All I can say is……………THANK YOU JESUS FOR YOUR DEPTH OF LOVE AND PATIENCE WITH ME…..I WILL NEVER FULLY UNDERSTAND YOU BUT MY APPRECIATION OF YOU GROWS EVERY YEAR……..

…word of the Lord stands forever…

November 3, 2008

Thank God for His word. The more I live the more I realize how unreliable everything in this world is. The more I realize how unreliable this world is the more my affection for His words grow. The word of God is my security blanket during thunder storms. When I am near it I feel His presence more keenly. I am like a child waiting for his father to return from a long trip. I can always read his letter to remind me that he’s going to come home soon. It’s such a long letter but every part of it has something to say to me.

1 Peter 1:24-25
“All men are like grass,
and all their glory is like the flowers of the field;
the grass withers and the flowers fall,
25 but the word of the Lord stands forever.”

Pastor’s Desk

October 29, 2008

We are surrounded by a hungry and dying world.  Sometimes the reality of this is overwhelming to say the least.  The more I am aware of the reality of my faith the more helpless I feel.  How can I possibly make any difference?  I know the theology of God’s sovereignty.  I know that it’s predestined and it’s all in His sovereign hands.  But how I live day to day not totally gripped by this reality is beyond my own comprehension.  Even the Lord wept over Jerusalem.

Lord, open my eyes to see the spiritual reality I live in.  Who wants to just make it?  I want to live.

Maybe some of you can relate…..

Sports Day

October 8, 2008

The sports day was a big success, at least from my perspective.  Our goal was to give the church an opportunity to clearly establish the identities of each ministry groups.  It was a great kick off to a new year for the collegians and a great victory for the newly established singles group.  The family ministry is growing week to week and to even have them out there represented was a huge testament to what God is doing in our community.  We had great fun and great fellowship as well.  Depending on how this turned out we were hoping to continue this tradition each year.  Seeing how everyone had so much fun and got to spend the whole day interacting with the church we will definitely do this again next year.  We have to…. Our winner’s plaque has 12 years of space to fill.

May God be glorified through Berean…..
